Clayton was born in Maryland, the son of Benjamin F. (1844-1910) and Catherine E. (Hartle) (1845-1902) Spessard. He had at least three sisters and a brother.
He graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1898, and taught Ancient Languages (Latin) and History at the Massanutten Academy in Woodstock when J. Silor Garrison was Headmaster, circa 1902.
After, he taught for a couple of years at York High School in Pennsylvania.
In 1906, Clayton moved to Idaho Springs, Colorado, (west of Denver) where he served as the Principal of the high school there. Later, he became a bank cashier at the Cedar Creek and Gilpin Trust Company of Idaho Springs, Colorado, until he retired.
While in York, Clayton had met Bertha C. Palmer, a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. They were both were teaching at the York High School together. Her parents lived in Denver and they were married there in 1907.
Clayton and his wife raised two sons, Frank P. and Clayton I. Spessard, Jr., both born in Colorado.
Clayton spent the rest of his life in Colorado but died while visiting family in Maryland.
