Identified in 2008 by Phyllis Wright, a great granddaughter of James K.P. Hoover, who had this photograph at home. She also shared that family lore includes a story where James, only 16 years old, was wounded during the war at a spot so close to his home (near the intersection of Hoover Road and Route 11 in Woodstock Virginia), that his mother and sister heard his screams.
James Hoover's service record information was extracted from information posted on his Find-A-Grave record.
