Medford grew up in Strasburg, the son of Charles Clinton and Ivy Lillian (Ritter) Himelright. His father worked at a lime plant and Medford had an older brother and sister.
When he registered for the WWII draft, Medford lived in Takoma Park, Montgomery County, Maryland, with his family. At that time, Medford worked for H.C. Smith on Van Ness Street in Washington D.C.
Medford served in the Army Air Force from 1942-1945, as a Sergeant. While in the military, he married Betty Jo (Anderson) Himelright in 1943 in Mississippi, and together, the couple raised four children.
Later in life, Medford and his family lived in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area.
