Blondell (or Brondell in some records) was from Strasburg, the son of Frank and Minnie Alice (Strosnider) Bly. His mother worked at the popular lunchroom on King Street owned by James Conelos, nicknamed "Jimmie the Greek".
In the 1930 census, he appeared as the oldest of four children living on Fishers Hill Road in Strasburg. His father had died and the family lived on a farm.
He married Ruth O. (Morris) Bly and the couple remained in the Stasburg area all their lives.
