Hewes was born in Woodstock to Joseph Henry and Mary Donaldson (Davis) Kelley. His mother was from an old and prominent Virginia family. She was a direct descendant of Josiah Hewes, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
His wife was Mary Amanda (Callery) Kelley, originally from Frederick County, Maryland.
This photograph was used in the book, "A Hockman Family History by Dennis Hockman, (page 242).

Identified in 2012 by Dennis Hockman, a 4th cousin of the subject who was shown the same photograph when he was researching his book, "A Hockman Family History: Biographies of the Ancestors and Descendants of Jacob F. Hockman".
