He was born on 2 April 1922 in Edinburg, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in December 1942 and served as a Corporal when he was discharged.
His area of expertise was as a propeller mechanic and he served in the central Pacific area from 6 December 1943 to 18 February 1945. He participated in the Marshall Islands Operation.
He was discharged from Cherry Point, North Carolina, and given a travel allowance to get him to Washington D.C.
