He was born on 19 April, 1921, in Front Royal, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in June 1942 and served as a Sergeant when he was discharged.
He qualified as a rifle marksman and automobile mechanic. He also served in the Southwest-Pacific area from 23 Dec 1944 to 3 April 1946. He participated in operation against enemy Japanese forces from 1 April 1945 to 14 April 1945, and as an element of the X army on Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Islands.
He was discharged from Norfolk, Virginia, and given a travel allowance to get him to Washington D.C.
