Description

Photograph of a marriage certificate attesting that Samuel Ray Spence and Peggy Jo Hite were married in New Market, Virginia, on December 30, 1940.

The clergyman was Rev. Roy D. Coulter, Minister of the Congregational-Christian Church.

Less than five years later, U.S. Army Pfc Spence was killed in action at the Battle of the Bulge in 1945. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Liege, Belgium.

He received a Purple Heart.
