CCC Camp Roosevelt

Subject

Civilian Conservation Corps (U.S.)

Description

Photo of a framed photograph of Camp Roosevelt located in the George Washington National Forest about 9 miles off US Route 11 in Fort Valley east of Edinburg.

The camp is historically significant because it was the first Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp established in the United States. It opened on April 17, 1933, as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program to combat the Great Depression.

The first enrollees were housed in barracks and worked under a military-style structure, with daily routines like reveille and work calls.

The CCC camps were closed in 1942.

There are five labels across the bottom of the original print. From l to r, they read:

"Camp Beauregard Exchange Studio Alexandria, Va"

"James R. Wilkins. Proj. Supt."

"Camp Roosevelt - The Pioneer Camp - Established April 17, 1933 - CCC Camp GWNFI VA. Co. 383"

The last two labels contain the job titles of these men:

Scott S. Geesey - 1st Lt. Inf. Res.
Walter M. Fuller - 1st Lt. Cav. Res.
Jacob R. Gish 2nd Lt. Eng. Res."

Paul D. Tucker - Captain Inf. Res. C.O.
Robert B. Duvall - 1st Lt. Eng. Res. Adj.
Angel A. Cardona - 1st Lt. M.C. Res. Surgeon
