Description
This photograph shows the Massanutten Academy's rifle squad in 1940. Due to the military nature of the institution rifle training was standard for each student. The 1940 school yearbook noted it “was practically continuous during the first and second terms.”
To improve the quality of their student’s marksmanship, a new system was introduced where the entire school would receive enhanced training and then compete to be on the school’s rifle team. This was apparently successful, and the school observed it “made for better shooting in the cadet corps as a whole.”
However it did not translate into success in inter-school competitions. To meet R.O.T.C. requirements, the school had to send a team to a regional shooting match. Cadets who outshot their academy cohorts were outmatched at this competition and placed eighth out of ten schools present.
