He was one of the Shenandoah Valley's most notable citizens, having served as president of Bowman Apple Products from 1975 until 2009 when he became Chairman of the Board and ultimately retired in December 2011.
Sonny Bowman was born in Mt. Jackson in 1934, the only son of Gordon Derwood and Martha Elton (Cadwallader) Bowman.
He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1956 with a degree in Horticulture, served in the U.S. Army for the next couple of years, and eventually earned a degree from Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1961 before returning to the family apple business.
His wife was Nancy Lynn (Albaugh) Bowman. They married in 1968.
He was active in his community and is remembered for the many philanthropic enterprises he initiated.
