Photograph of the monument commemorating the unjust execution of Captain George W. Summers and Sergeant Newton Koontz Company D 7th Virginia Cavalry on June 27, 1865, by order of Union Lt. Col. Huzzy.

The execution took place after the South had surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse and should not have happened.

The monument is located south of Mt. Jackson on Route 11 in the area of Rude's Hill.
