He was the son of Robert (some records say Richard) Purcell and Betty Jane (Dalton) Newland.
Jimmy graduated from Central High School in 1968.
In 1972, he married Susan Carole Baker, the daughter of Preston Elwood and Juanita Genevieve (Wolfe) Baker, of New Market. The couple had a daughter together before divorcing in 1990.
His second wife was Patricia Ann Hullihen.
