Gary was the son of Joseph Lemuel and Geneva Mae (Crider) Wakeman of Edinburg.
He graduated from Central High School in 1969 and married Jeri Leigh Dickinson a year later. The couple raised two children together.
Gary was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Virginia Army National Guard. He retired honorably at the rank of Master Sergeant with 28 years of service. His military service included deployment to Bosnia, he was Senior Chaplain's Assistant for the 29th I.D. (Light) and Senior Enlisted Adviser to the National Guard Joint Staff NGB in Arlington, VA.
