Claymont House
Description
Photograph of the southwest front of "Claymont", a large historic home located three miles southwest of Charles Town, West Virginia.
The original house was built about 1820 by Bushrod Corbin Washington (1970-1851), a grand nephew of General George Washington. His grand uncle, Charles, founded the town of Charles Town and another grand uncle, Samuel, lived nearby at Harewood.
The image shows an expansive front lawn. Trees around the house obscure additional wings of the sprawling home.
This photograph was used on page 26 of the book, "Historic Homes of Northern Virginia" by John W. Wayland.
