Gordon was born in Washington D.C. to Lewis Henry and Virginia (Rhinehart) Rutz.
He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War (1964-1966).
He lived in Falls Church, Virginia in 1968, when he married Carolyn Ann Lowe. The couple had three children together. They divorced in 1982.
He retired as a master trooper with the Virginia State Police and then worked as an annex manager for Pifer Office Supply.
His second wife was Dorothea Marie (Tenney) Rutz.
The image on the left has a mark at the top where the photographer noted which of the two images he planned to print.
