Biographical Text
John Harris was born in Shenandoah County on December 27, 1843. On March 16, 1863 he enlisted in the United States Colored Troops, 54th Massachusetts Infantry, Company D. During the Civil War he fount in the battle of Grimball's Landing, Fort Wagner, Olustee, Honey Hill, and Boykins Mill. He was mustered out on August 20, 1865 and paid $50 for three years of service.
In 1868 he married Cherlda Benson. They had at least eight children, Orrin, John Jr, Fred, Ella, Albin, William, Lynn, and Lena. The couple lived first in Michigan where their first few children were born and then in Pennsylvania, specifically Towanda, Bradford County, where they resided in 1880.
John Harris died January 27, 1894 in Candor, Potter County Pennsylvania.
