Violet grew up in Fort Valley, one of at least eight children born to Kemper Clay (1896-1938) and Zola Eugenia (Munch) Powell (1900-1978).
Violet married Chester Emra Bucklew (1913-1988) in July 1948. Chester was born in Kirby, West Virginia, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Alice Virginia (Higgleman) Bucklew. He lived in Strasburg and was a jeweler. This was his second marriage and her first. They had at least one son together, Mark Wayne Bucklew (1952-2022).
At some point, Violet and Chester moved to West Virginia where they are buried together in Rock Oak Cemetery, Baker, in Hardy County.
