Portrait photograph of John Homer Helsley in his US Army Air Forces Uniform.
He served as a Corporal in the 408 Airborne QM CO during World War II (WWII). This unit was a specialized logistics unit of the U.S. Army. It primarily served as the organic supply and logistical backbone for the 11th Airborne Division during World War II.
John Homer Helsley was the son of Grover Cleveland and Vallie May (Putman) Helsley. He grew up in Oranda.
He married June Victoria Hamilton on June 10, 1950, in Strasburg. At that time, they both were living there. Homer worked in Front Royal at the Viscose Plant.
June was born in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and was just 16 when she married. Her parents, Garland B. and Mamie Virginia (Whitmer) Hamilton, moved to Strasburg, Virginia, some time after she was born.
The couple lived in Fishers Hill and bought a house there in 1961. They had two children together but the marriage did not last.
John Homer Helsley died of carbon dioxide poisoning when he lived on Holliday Street in Strasburg, and was working as a truck driver for Bauserman Transfer Company.
He is buried in Lebanon Church, Virginia.
The name, "John Helsley" and the place, "Strasburg", are written on the glass plate negative of this image.
