Photograph of Timothy Phalen as a boy.
He was from Strasburg, the son of Timothy Bernard and Lillian Ruth (Smith) Phalen. He had a brother, James, and a sister, Cecelia. His father was a well-known locomotive engineer for the B&O railroad.
In 1930, the family lived on West King Street in Strasburg. Timothy's mother was not listed but his maternal grandparents and a cousin were living with them.
In the 1940 census, he and his two siblings lived with their great aunt and uncle, Hugh and Ida Stoneburner, on "A" Street in Strasburg.
