Born in Mt. Jackson, his parents were John Brown Mumaw, a farmer, and his wife, Nancy E. (Foltz) Mumaw.
He married Emma M. (Cacace) Mumaw in Brooklyn, New York, in 1934. At that time, he worked as an accountant.
When he died many years later, he lived in Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut.
