Title
Heber L. Wolverton
Subject
Wolverton, Heber Leon (1893-1957)
Description
Portrait of Heber L. Wolverton wearing a suit and tie.
Heber was born near Saumsville, the son of John W. (1870-1966) and Maggie Elizabeth (Spiker) (1867-1945) Wolverton. He grew up on his family’s farm and both the 1910 and 1920 censuses found him there.
Heber’s birth was registered late (1942) when a bible (printed in 1884) was shown to the clerk’s office that showed Heber’s entry and date of birth. His father, by then in his eighties, signed the record affirming the information.
By 1930, he had been married to Mildred May Hottel (1902-1992) for more than a year. The couple lived with her parents, David Samuel and Lulu Byrd (Hollingsworth) Hottel, on their farm in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County. Heber was a carpenter and worked odd jobs.
When Heber registered for the WWII draft, he worked for Dan Burner in Woodstock. Years later, when he died, his employment was as a laborer for a grader manufacturing company. His last residence was in Woodstock.
Both he and his wife are buried together in Massanutten Cemetery in Woodstock.
