Darlena was born in Boomer, North Carolina, to James Bernard and Wanda Rebecca (Miller) Walsh.
She graduated from Central High School in Woodstock in 1966.
She still lived in Woodstock when she married Glen Shelton Knicely in 1968.
After she married, her photograph appeared in the yearbook as a senior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Later in life, she moved to Penn Laird, Virginia.

Identified in 2003 by Diane (Miller) Warren who remembered this photograph was taken during her older sister's visit in July 1948. She has the same photograph at home. She was Darlena's aunt.
