Description
Portrait of Charles Bernard Getz (who went by Bernard) as a young man wearing a suit and tie with a high starched collar.
Bernard was born to Charles Monroe (1864-1937) and Annie Maria (Jones) (1864-1930) Getz. His family lived and farmed near “Moores Store”, Virginia.
In 1930, Bernard worked as an electrician and lived in the Lee District with his widowed father, sisters, and two teenaged nephews.
Soon after, Bernard married Katharine Frances (Sowers) (1896-1959) Getz. Her parents were Clayton Kile (1865-1939) and Laura (Bushong) (1866-1948) Sowers.
In 1940, the census found the couple with two sons, Gene Kile Getz (1932-1982) and Grayson Sowers Getz (1935- ). The family lived on Route 11 in the Ashby District of Shenandoah County and Bernard was still an electrician.
When he registered for the WWII draft, Bernard lived with his wife in Mt. Jackson where he was “self-employed”. The draft card noted he had a “defective arm and hand”. He was described as being 5’11” tall and 200 pounds.
Both Bernard and his wife are buried in Forestville.
