Ann was the daughter of Guy Anderson and Katharine (Hottel) Benchoff. She and her three siblings grew up in Woodstock. Her parents worked at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) and her uncle was the headmaster there for more than fifty years.
Ann attended Woodstock High School (Class of 1946), and the Massanutten Military Academy (MMA).
She earned a bachelor of arts degree in fine arts in 1951 from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. At Hood, she was an active member of the Hood Glee Club where she met her husband (a Franklin and Marshall College student and aspiring doctor), Charles F. Stamm. In the early 1950's, after graduating, Ann worked as a purchasing agent for Hutzler's department store in Baltimore, Maryland.
After the couple married in 1955, they were stationed with the Air Force Medical Corps at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska, during the Cold War. Next, they moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, before settling in Schenectady, New York.
Ann was extremely active in her Schenectady community.
She and her husband raised four children: Katharine, Martha, Charles, and Jared.
