Elizabeth (Hickman) Newman was born in Hampshire County, West Virginia. Her father was John T. Hickman. Her mother’s maiden name was “Trout”.
She married Benjamin Pennybacker Newman (1823-1902) on May 6, 1851, and lived near Liberty Furnace for many years as her husband owned an iron furnace.
The 1860 census found the family still there and by that time, Elizabeth and her husband had four young sons. Later the family moved to Woodstock, where they farmed.
