Photograph of Sam Stickley as a young man.
His parents were Frank Kern and Elizabeth (Newell) Stickley, a farming couple from the Davis District of Shenandoah County. He married Sarah Irene Stickley (1903-1968), from Frederick County, and lived with her on a farm in the Strasburg area until his death.
Sarah Irene Stickley was the daughter of William Murphy Stickley and Emeline Daisy Fry. In the 1940 census, she was a teacher at a public school while her husband, Sam, was listed as a farmer.
They are both buried in Riverview Cemetery in Strasburg, Virginia.
