Subject
Himelright, Leonard Leroy (1936-1947)
Craun, Lois Rebecca Himelright (1938- )
Description
Leonard Leroy Himelright and his younger sister, Lois, are standing together on a chair.
Their parents were Leonard Carlton Himelright (born in Star Tannery) and Mamie Maria Good. Their mother died in 1940 and is buried at Gravel Springs Church in Oranda. Their father's second wife was Dorothy J. Himelright.
Leonard L. Himelright died in a drowning accident a few years after this photograph was taken. At the time, he lived in Oranda with his grandmother, Lillian (Sager) Good. Several newspapers published accounts of the incident on August 18, 1947. They all said he died on "Cedar Creek at Minebank Ford where he had been playing with several other children". The Northern Virginia Daily noted that "The youth was taken to Dr. Crawford's office in Strasburg by his uncle, Ernest Good, where several hours of respiration failed to revive him."
His sister, Lois, appears as an eleven year old girl in the 1950 census with her father, step-mother and five younger half siblings. She later married Charles Craun and had at least one daughter, Tammy Lee Craun.
The name, "Leonard Himelright", is written on the glass plate.
