Mary was the only child of Franklin Schmucker (1871-1963) and Sarah Fletcher (Supinger) (1870-1953) Bowman. Her father was a merchant in Woodstock.
Mary became a well-known music teacher at Woodstock High School and served as an organist in her church, Emmanuel Lutheran.
She never married.
