Hazel was born in Forestville, a daughter of Robert A. and Bertie (Heishman) Pence.
She worked as a secretary to the registrar of James Madison University and also as a secretary of the Harrisonburg Chamber of Commerce.
She was a member of the Luconocia Garden Club at New Market and the Reformation Lutheran Church.
Her husband was Richard Russell Renalds (1906-1995). They married in 1929. The couple had three children, Robert, Ann and Marlene.
