Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Nancy French Hottel Riddleberger and Robert Holt Riddleberger Sr.
The family ran a store in Strasburg, "Riddleberger's Store", from 1912 to 1978.
She attended Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Pennsylvania State University. She was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing where she assisted in the groundbreaking "Blue Baby" surgery, one of the most significant developments in cardiovascular procedures of its day.
Her husband was Dr. George H. Bunch Jr. The couple had four sons together.
