Photograph of Howard J. Benchoff with his arm around his young daughter, Rosalie (Benchoff) Noell.

Howard Johnston Benchoff was a well-known and influential headmaster of Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) in Woodstock.

He was the son of Loudon Francis and Martha Belle (Johnston) Benchoff. His first wife was Kathryn Leona Mahon who died in 1918. His second wife was Florence Conant. He had a son, Robert J. Benchoff and a daughter, Mrs. William (Rosalie) W. Noel, when he died in Woodstock in 1958.

His daughter, Rosalie, grew up on the campus on Massanutten Military Academy. In 1930, she married a doctor, William B. Noel, and moved with him first to Michigan and eventually to North Carolina where the couple raised two sons.
