Edith was born December 24 1902 to parents John Eckard and Vertie Eckard. She grew up near the Hamburg community with three siblings. At one point her father ran one of the community's stores.
In 1928 she married Markwood Polk. They had one son, Robert Franklin Polk Sr. She was a life long member of St. John's Reformed/UCC Church in Hamburg Virginia.
