He is remembered for having been the president of Shaffer's, Inc. and Shaffer's Barbecue Service, retiring in 1990.
John was born in Maurertown, the son of Vernon Spitler and Leah (Stover) Shaffer.
He grew up in Maurertown, graduated from Woodstock High School and attended Palmer's Business School.
He served as a bombardier in the Navy Air Corps in World War II and was stationed in England and North Africa.
After his military service, John married Joanna (Gardner) Shaffer in 1946. The couple lived in Woodstock, where they raised three children: John Vernon, Ann (Shaffer) Grisdale, and Katherine (Shaffer) McAleer.
