Joseph was a grandson of Ephriam Bowman and a son of Martin Luther and Ida Roseanna (Myers) Bowman from the rural Edinburg area of Shenandoah County.
He married Joyce Augusta (Dellinger) Bowman, a daughter of Charles Peter and Mary Catherine "Cassie" (Dodson) Dellinger.
Together, the couple raised three sons: Wilbur Alden Bowman, Twymore Elmore Bowman, and Dick Delford Bowman.
Both he and his wife are buried together in Conicville, Shenandoah County.

Identified in 2009 by Nancye L. Bowman, a distant relative of the couple. She remembered seeing this photograph at their home on S. Middle Road in the Hamburg area.
