Barbara was a daughter of Guy Benchoff and Ann Katharine (Hottel) Benchoff. She and her three siblings grew up in Woodstock. Both parents worked at Massanutten Military Academy (MMA) for many years.
Barbara married Wesley Parker Miles in 1956. He was a Presbyterian Minister born in Accomac County, Virginia. At the time of their marriage, he lived in Geneva, New York.
As of 2020, she lived in Brooklyn, New York.
