Photograph of Ann Lee (Hite) Van Buren as a young woman seated on a bench.

Anna was from Edinburg, the daughter of Milton Lloyd and Anna Mary (Fravle) Hite.

Not long after she graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory and College (now called Shenandoah University) in Winchester with a degree in music, she moved to Hampton, Virginia, in 1944.

Her husband was William Ralph Van Buren, Jr. from Hampton, Virginia. They married in 1951. At the time, he was a newspaper and radio executive. Anna was a band director.

The couple raised two children: a daughter, Anna (Van Buren) McNider, and a son, William R. Van Buren, III.

Her obituary appeared in the Daily Press Newspaper of Newport News, Virginia, The article, from May 1987, noted she was a "Peninsula cultural leader and a former director of the Daily Press Inc.".

When she died, she was the vice chairman and former owner of the company that publishes The Daily Press and the Times Herald newspapers.

The obituary also mentioned she was well-known in the Tidewater area for her support of fine arts and had been honored frequently for her community service.
