He married Anna Mae (Hottle) Smoot in 1948.
After his military service, he worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation, retiring after 33 years. He was a maintenance superintendent.
He and his wife raised three sons: Orville L., Ronald L. and Larry K. Smoot.

Identified in 2012 by Orville L. Smoot, son of Norman Smoot, and told to Bonnie Painter. He also remembered Norman had a sister, Arlene Barb.
