They were the children of Robert and Dorothy (Rush) Pangle. In the 1940 census, the family lived and farmed in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County.
Dorothy was born in Washington D.C. while her brother was born in Virginia.
By 1950, the two children had two additional sisters, Laura and Jean. Their father worked as a salesman in an appliance store.
