He was born on 11 February 1924 in Mt. Jackson, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in March 1943 and served as a Private First Class when he was discharged.
He qualified as a rifle marksman and automatic refleman. He also served in the Asiatic-Pacific area from 30 Oct 1943 to 18 June 1945. He participated in action against enemy forces at Empress Augusta Bay and Guam.
He was discharged from Bainbridge, Maryland, and given a travel allowance to get him to Woodstock, Virginia.
