He served in Bainbridge, Maryland, Norfolk, Virginia, Brooklyn New York and aboard the USS Thomas H. Benton and the SS Richard R. Arnold.

Bernard was born in Linville, Virginia, on December 7, 1922. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in September 1943.

His was undecided about what he wanted to do going forward.

This document lists his medals as: the American Area Medal, the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Paific Medal, and the European African Theater Medal & 1 Star.
