Joseph was born in Mt. Jackson, Virginia, on , March 30, 1944. He was working for W.H. Tisinger as a fruit farmer in Mt. Jackson, when he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in March 1944.
At the time of his discharge, his preference for going forward was to go back to his old job in Mt. Jackson, Virginia.
This document lists his medals as: the American Area, Asiatic-Pacific, Philippine Liberation (1 star), and the World War II Victory Medal.
