Virginia is best remembered for the years she taught first grade in Toms Brook.

She was born in Rockland County, Virginia, the fourth child born to William David and Anna Betty (Brownlee) Heizer.

Her parents had married in 1898 in Waynesboro, Virginia. Her father was a farmer.

Virginia married Frank Linwood Bashaw, Jr. and had a daughter, Marian Cleo (Bashaw) French.

In 1936, the family moved to Maurertown. Frank enlisted in the U.S. Marines in April 1942 and served six months before being honorably discharged.

A few years later, in 1945, the family settled on a farm on the banks of the Shenandoah River.
