Jack Marsh is best remembered for his distinguished career in local and national politics.
At nineteen, he was made a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served from 1944 to 1947, some of it in occupied Germany.
In 1952, he earned a law degree from Washington & Lee and started a private practice in Strasburg. He was New Market's Town Attorney for a time.
He also held several local political offices before running, as a Democrat, for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1962. He won the election and stayed for four terms before deciding not to run again.
Next, he worked in both the Nixon and Ford Administrations. He was appointed Secretary of the Army in 1981 and served eight years before finally retiring from politics.
