Sylvia was born in West Virginia, the daughter of Oscar Clarence and Fannie Lee (Helmick) Shoemaker.
She graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School and married John Jacob Scott in 1969. At the time, she lived in Mt. Jackson and he lived in Woodstock.
The image on the left has a mark at the top where the photographer noted which of the two images he planned to print.
