She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, the daughter of Lavelon C. and Anna Lee (Thompson) Sydnor.
Nancy graduated with a Bachelors degree in education from Madison College (JMU) in 1959. She started a teaching career that spanned three decades. She taught in Roanoke, Virginia, Lynchburg, Virginia, and Newfoundland, Canada. She retired from Shenandoah County Schools in 1991.
She lived in Mt. Jackson and left behind twin sons, William Jr. and Thomas S. Rea.
