Her parents were Paul Leland and Dorothy Margaret (Mitchel) Swecker. She grew up in Woodstock and graduated from Central High School circa 1966.
Her first marriage was to Ross Harold Taylor, Jr., born in California, whom she met while a student at Virginia Polytechnical Institute (now called Virginia Tech). Married in 1968, that marriage did not last.
She married for the second time in 1978 to John Robert Slaughter, Jr.
