Powells Fort Community and Improvement League
In 1915 the Powells Fort Community and Improvement League was founded in the new Fort Valley High and Graded School.
At the time the idea of civic improvement was sweeping the nation. Community members felt if they could band together in a volunteer organization they could clean up their communities, improve education, and enhance services.
Fort Valley residents felt the same way about their community. The Powells Fort League worked to aid the Fort Valley School, to host civic events, and to provide social opportunities for members. They were also a member of the National Civic League.
Over the next few years the League completed many projects that were in line with its mission. The organization purchased science equipment for the school, sponsored several plays, formed a debating society, hosted social events, and much more. Their activities defined Fort Valley life.
