Title

Mamie (Painter) Barbe

Subject

Barbe, Mamie Catherine (Painter) (1908-2001)

Description

Portrait of Mamie Catherine (Painter) Barbe wearing a suit jacket and a blouse with ruffles in the front.

She was one of eight children born to George Frank (1873-1954) and Nellie May (Pangle) (1876-1977) Painter. When she was quite young, the family lived in the Forks District of Warren County where her father rented a farm.

By 1920, the family lived in the Johnston District of Shenandoah County, (Toms Brook), and owned their farm. Mamie and her siblings grew up there.

Mamie married Gilbert Martin Barbe (1909-1969), a WWII veteran and the son of M.W. and Lillie (Hammond) Barbe.

The 1950 census found the couple living in the Stonewall District where Gilbert worked as a mechanic at the “Viscose Plant” (later called Avtex Fibers) and Mamie worked as a seamstress in a coat manufacturing company.

At some point, the couple moved back to Toms Brook.
