According to "A History of St. Matthew Evangelical LutheranChurch, Toms Brook, Virginia" (found on the church's website), Alfred Shumate served the North Mountain Parish from November 1930 to January 1937. After leaving Toms Brook, Rev. Shumate went on to serve as pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Waynesboro, Virginia.

Alfred Shumate was my great-grandfather. He was married to Ellen Burkholder Shumate and they had three children. The eldest, Thomas Joseph "Joe" Shumate also became a Lutheran minister and served in various congretations around the state. Their middle child is Kathleen Shumate Tucker. Their youngest son, Robert Hanger Shumate, was born in the church parsonage on Route 11 in Toms Brook.

He enlisted in the army as a chaplain during World War II, serving as pastor to fighter pilots in England.

Alfred Shumate had an identical twin brother named Albert who was also a Lutheran minister, primarily serving congregations in Southwest Virginia. They were often confused for one another.

Two of Alfred Shumate's decendents became Lutheran ministers who have served churches in Shenandoah County. His granddaughter, Karen Shumate Van Stee, was the pastor of St. Mary Pine Lutheran Church in Mount Jackson. Alfred's oldest great-grandchild, Kristen Van Stee, is the pastor of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in New Market.
